2023 Cannons Coaches

  • Jackson Root, Senior Cannons Head Coach

    Jackson returns to the Cannons in 2023 as the new Head Coach of the Senior team and remains on the Board of Directors as General Manager. As a player ‘Dad’ or ‘Jax’ by nicknames, excelled as a player for the Cannons, Montpelier Legion and U-32 High School where led the Varsity team to the DII State Finals. Jackson won two Cy Young Awards with the Junior Cannons as a player and was a Central VT All-Star as a pitcher at U-32.

  • Sean Callahan, Assistant Coach

    Sean Callahan played for the Cannons from 2012 to 2014, graduating as one of the program’s most successful and respected pitchers. He posted a 2.74 career earned-run average and 189 strikeouts in 160.2 innings and his 18 career wins are the second most in Cannons history. Sean played college baseball at UMass Dartmouth as a 4-year starter. Callahan was a Little East Conference Second Team selection and an LEC Spring All-Academic honoree as a senior. Sean played professional baseball in Colorado as a member of the Triggers in the SE Colorado league. Sean hold an MA in Accounting and Finance from SNHU and is a Senior Analyst at Teradyne Semiconductor in the Aerospace and Defense Division and a recent member of their Finance Manager training program.

  • Thomas Vesosky, Assistant Coach

    Thomas Vesosky returns for his second season with the Cannons coaching staff after assisting the 15U Cannons in 2022. Thomas completed his career at the University of Southern Maine, graduating in May 2023. At USM, Vesosky hit leadoff slashing .327 with an OBP and led the team in hits (56) and triples (4) in 2022. A storied Cannons Alum, ‘Tommy,’ was the Sr. Cannons MVP in 2017 and Gold Glove winner in 2018. A Colchester High School Alum, Vesosky was a two-time All-Metro first team pick, and second team once and batted .492 his senior year leading the Lakers to the State Finals.

16U Jr Cannons Coaches

  • Matt Brault, Head Coach

    Cannons alumnus and Jr Cannons Head Coach Matt Brault returns for his third season as the Head Coach of the Jr Cannons. Matt previously excelled as a pitching and outfield coach in our training program and will be integral to our planning committee as we develop our vision moving forward. Matt graduated from Lyndon State in 2023 and was the Captain of their baseball team. Matt is a certified Rapsodo trainer with experience in data analytics for both pitching and hitting.

  • Eben Provost, Assistant Coach

    ‘Eb’ returns for his third season as an Assistant Coach with the Jr Cannons. Eben earned accolades as one of the premier defensive players in VT baseball during his six year Cannons playing career and as a 3-year starting shortstop for Colchester High School Varsity baseball. Winner of many Gold Glove awards, an MVP and Silver Slugger awards, Eben has taught at numerous Colchester and Burr and Burton baseball clinics and excels at teaching infielders and hitters. Eben graduated from St. Anselm College in 2023.

    Matt Brault, Board of Directors

  • Dylan Newton, Board of Directors

    Dylan Newton graduated BFA St. Albans in 2010. He is a thought leader who is passionate about the game of baseball and continues to work with youth athletes around New England.

    Newton, who attended NVU-Lyndon from 2011 to 2015, was a 4-year starter and impact player. During his time playing collegiately, he also had the opportunity to play for the Olean Oilers of the NYCBL.

    Today, Newton continues to play and manage in the Green Mountain Baseball league, which he has done on an off since 2011. In 2022, Dylan was named President of the Board of Directors of the GMBL, a 501c3 non-profit in the State of Vermont.

    Also in 2022, Dylan was promoted to the role of Head Varsity Baseball coach for BFA St-Albans after spending a number of years assisting both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams.

    Outside of baseball Dylan is a K-2 PE teacher at Swanton Elementary School. Dylan has 3 kids (Jacoby, Jamison, Jolie) and an amazing wife, Sadie!

    Jackson Root will join as a Board member in addition to his role as Head Coach of the Senior Cannons in 2023.

Founding Members

  • Jeff Mongeon

    Jeff was the Head Coach of the Sr Cannons for 13 seasons and also served as General Manager for 18 years. Jeff coached the Cannons to three State Championships. The program's all-time winningest coach, Mongeon accrued a 13-year head coaching record of 270-205-3 from 2002 to 2014. During that time, the Cannons registered eight 20-win seasons, including a string of four consecutive seasons from 2011 to 2014, while also earning state championships in 2009, 2011 and 2013. 27 of his players went onto play college baseball. Jeff is a Joe Pattison Award John Boylan Award winner from the VT American Legion. A 1997 Colchester High School graduate, Mongeon is President of the Winooski Insurance Agency and co-Founder and Chief Insurance Officer at Polly, formerly Dealer Policy, a new nationwide auto insurance company..

  • Bob Wheel

    Bob helped the Cannons from our first year on through 2020 in a variety of roles, Team Driver, PA Announcer, Photographer and Advisor just to name a few. Bob was a long-time employee of IBM and Global Foundries, a former VT Volunteer Fire Chief and avid supporter of Vermont Semi-Pro and Lake Monster Baseball as a player host.

  • Dave Saddlemire

    The Cannons first Assistant Coach and Chief Storyteller, Dave worked with the Cannons program for 19 seasons. Dave taught at Colchester High School for 20 years and coached Varsity baseball there for 16. While at CHS, Saddlemire coached the 1992 and 1993 Twin State teams, held the post of President of the Vermont Baseball Coaches Association (1995-1997) and was named Metro South Coach of the Year (1995). During the 2000 season, he led the Lakers to the State Championship game, and on May 22, 2001, the Colchester baseball field, our home field for Cannons Baseball, was officially named ‘Saddlemire Field.’ After officially retiring from teaching and coaching in 2017, Dave continued to prepare the field for our Summer games until 2020.

  • Eric 'Giss' Gissendanner

    Providing the Cannons with advanced statistics, a legendary rule book find in a VT State Championship game, and overall Program Advisory, “Giss,” spent 14 seasons with the Cannons. Retiring ‘multiple’ times and returning, we awarded Eric a Brett Farve jersey and, frankly, expect him back for the start of any future season. A graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh in Journalism, Eric served in Sports Information roles at his Alma mater and at St. Michael’s College. Eric lives in Iowa and is a Communications and Promotions Coordinator for Riverside Casino and Golf Resort.

  • Adam Provost

    Adam ‘Batman’ Provost coached in a variety of roles with the Sr and Jr Cannons for 16 seasons. Adam coached high school and Summer youth baseball for 30 years with a head coaching record of 464-204. Adam coached at CVU for 15 years with 10 as the Varsity coach and led the school to its first D1 State Baseball Championship in 2003. He led Burr and Burton Academy to two State Final appearances in seven years and the most wins in school history over a seven year period. He was President of the Vermont Baseball Coaches Association from 2003-2005 and its Executive Director from 2006 - 2012. Adam worked in technology education for 30 years as a teacher, IT and CTE Director, college Adjunct Professor and was President of VITA-Learn for 8 years, an organization that leads technology related professional development for k-12 teachers. Adam is the owner of AP Consulting specializing in leadership training, education innovation, media/branding and graphic design. Adam’s son Eben, a player for six seasons, joined the Cannons coaching staff in 2021. We also pulled him out of retirement for this website refit and ongoing assistance with technology and social media.

  • Matt Rodovick

    ‘Roddy,’ as he’s known to most, coached the Sr Cannons team for six season and served as an Assistant coach for four years prior. Matt led the Cannons to one State Championship and two league titles highlighted by a stellar 22-2 season in league play in 2019. Rodovick played two years at Division I University of Massachusetts at Amherst before transferring to Springfield College, where he graduated in 2006. Matt works for the Chittenden South Supervisory Union at Charlotte School and is enjoying time with his wife Emily and their new son.
